Roaming vs eSIM

Austria eSIM or local SIM: the number, start date and EU allowance

Match the phone number, data and usable days together. A1 tourist starters include a number and start their included units at registration and installation. Travel data starts on first supported-network connection. Keep the selected A1 shop’s lower EU allowance in the budget where its pages disagree.

Choose Austria service for your number, data and days

An Austrian number, the data allowance and the final usable day belong in the same comparison. A1’s tourist starters include a number, while our travel plans supply app data, so the right purchase depends on which service you need and whether it continues into the next country.

We sell the SIM Shop plans below. A1’s offers keep their 21 October 2026 check date, and our store prices and terms were checked on 25 October. The A1 landing page and selected shop page give different EU-data figures for the larger starter, so that limit stays visible in the comparison rather than being settled by whichever number looks more generous.

Registration and installation affect when the holiday allowance starts

The selected A1 shop pages say the included units activate automatically when you register and install the eSIM. Do not complete that process a week before departure on the assumption that the clock waits for your first Austrian connection. With a two-week starter, using up a week before the trip would consume roughly half the advertised period before you need it.

A1’s visitor FAQ specifies photo-ID registration online or at an A1 shop, with passports among its examples. If online verification fails, use the stated shop alternative; individual identity approval remains necessary before the service is ready.

Start with whether you need an Austrian number

An ordinary number is useful when someone needs to ring you through the telephone network, rather than through WhatsApp or another internet app. A1’s selected B.free Travel starters include a number. Our Austria travel eSIM supplies data without ordinary calls or SMS, so it suits the second kind of conversation.

For a three-week visit with an expected 12 GB of use and a need for an Austrian number, A1 Travel L is the better fit of its two starters: its four-week term covers the stay, whereas Travel S ends after two weeks. Paying €5 more solves that duration problem; buying the cheaper pack because both say 50 GB leaves a week unaccounted for.

If ordinary calls to Australia are essential, neither our data-only plan nor the inspected A1 starter wording establishes an included Australia-calling solution. Use a home-carrier roaming service that expressly includes those calls, or a separately priced international calling option; app calls are an alternative only when both people can use the app.

What the two A1 tourist starters actually show

These are the prices and inclusions on the selected Travel S and Travel L shop pages checked for this guide. Amounts are euros, not Australian dollars.

Selected A1 starterOne-off priceOverall dataEU portion shown in the shopIncluded-unit term
B.free Travel S€12.9050 GB20 GB within the 50 GBTwo weeks
B.free Travel L€17.9050 GB20 GB within the 50 GBFour weeks

Both include an eSIM and a phone number. A1’s tourist landing page explicitly lists 2,000 minutes and 2,000 texts in Austria/EU, plus 50 minutes and 50 texts to EU countries/Switzerland; the shop abbreviates this to “minutes & texts”.

However, that landing page shows 28 GB of EU data for L, against 20 GB in both sections of the selected shop page. These A1 pages conflict. For a purchase through that shop, budget against its lower 20 GB figure; we would not recommend it for a trip needing 22 GB of EU roaming data on the strength of the landing page alone.

That EU portion sits inside the total. A hypothetical 35 GB in Austria plus 18 GB in other included EU destinations needs 53 GB, which exceeds the 50 GB pack even though the roaming portion is below 20 GB. Reduce the Austrian use to 30 GB and the total becomes 48 GB, fitting both quantity limits during the active term. The allowance does not become 70 GB at the border, however politely you ask it.

Switzerland needs separate attention. An allowance for calls to Switzerland does not provide data in Switzerland. For an Austria–Switzerland itinerary, our selected 32-country Europe eSIM explicitly lists both destinations; the Austria-only product is not a substitute. Use the Europe comparison for the regional plan’s shared allowance and duration choices.

Smaller data allowances for app-based travel

Our selected fixed-data Austria options are:

DataValidityPrice in AUD
1 GB7 daysA$5.95
3 GB30 daysA$13.95
5 GB30 daysA$17.95
10 GB30 daysA$27.95
20 GB30 daysA$44.95
50 GB180 daysA$149.95

These list 3 and A1.net with 4G/5G access. Hotspot use depends on the network and device, so those details are not a guarantee of laptop connectivity or uninterrupted reception on a particular mountain route.

For an eight-day trip budgeted at 250 MB daily, the worked total is 2 GB. Our 3 GB/30-day option fits with 1 GB in reserve, while the 1 GB/7-day option misses both the quantity and the duration. That gives you enough data and days for the example if apps cover your communication needs.

Euro and Australian-dollar prices above remain in their original currencies. They are not an exchange-rate comparison or proof that one provider is always cheaper.

Staying for 31 days takes more than a 30-day label

Suppose an Austria-only visitor expects 6 GB over 31 days. A single 10 GB/30-day plan has ample data but still ends too soon, and adding data within its validity is not evidence of a longer clock.

For example, allow 5.5GB for the first thirty days and 0.5GB for the last day. A 10GB/30-day plan plus a separate 1GB/seven-day plan totals A$33.90, leaving 4.5GB and 0.5GB spare respectively. You’ll need a phone that can accommodate the second profile, plus working Wi-Fi to install and start it at the changeover. The balances stay separate; unused data on the first plan expires when that plan ends.

For someone who wants one profile instead, our 50 GB/180-day option covers those quantity and duration inputs at A$149.95. The two-purchase example costs A$116.05 less, in exchange for handling that changeover; it is not a way to extend the first pack for free.

For an Austrian number throughout the stay, A1’s visitor FAQ gives a continuation route: regular B.free L, €32/four weeks, 50 GB including 35 GB in EU countries. Top up by shop voucher or its linked online service, then text Yes to 2982. Initial Travel L plus that subsequent pack totals €49.90 for two successive four-week periods, rather than a repeat €17.90 starter price.

The FAQ quotes €0.50/MB after included units are used: 100 billed MB would cost €50. Activate the replacement pack before continuing chargeable use after exhaustion; that is rate arithmetic, not a billing test.

For a local number through a longer stay, price the continuation pack as well as the starter. For app data, compare one longer allowance with separate profiles for the actual periods you need. In either case, keep the activation date and onward-country limit beside the price.

Set up your SIM Shop plan after arrival

Our selected Austria variants instead state that validity starts on the first network connection, with a 180-day window to start. Follow our Austria setup guide: buy before departure, save the delivery email, then install after landing on working airport Wi-Fi, hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection. Follow the issued instructions for the travel line’s roaming and APN settings, while keeping Australian-line data roaming off unless you deliberately chose that carrier’s roaming service.
