A seven-day cost comparison with the missing extras visible
We’re The SIM Shop, so the comparison includes our own plans. Put the full eSIM basket beside the router’s final rental quote, keeping each traveller’s need for an independent connection with the price.
At our 31 October check, Japan Wireless’s direct rate table showed its Business Wi-Fi seven-day base rental at ¥7,450, with an AUD display of A$69. That is the published base, not a completed checkout quote. The order form separately includes shipping/service fees and optional protection. Get the rental quote for your actual pickup and return dates, add delivery/service fees and any protection you choose, and keep its payment currency visible. Compare that final total with the complete eSIM basket.
| Option | Group cost shown | What you are buying |
|---|---|---|
| One Japan 10GB eSIM | A$19.95 | 10GB on one phone; 30-day validity |
| Two Japan 10GB eSIMs | A$39.90 | 10GB per phone; allowances cannot be pooled |
| Four Japan 10GB eSIMs | A$79.80 | Four independent 10GB allowances |
| One Japan full-speed unlimited eSIM, seven days | A$34.95 | One host phone; this exact offer has no separate hotspot allowance |
| One Japan Wireless Business Wi-Fi rental, seven days | ¥7,450 base; site displays A$69 | Dedicated shared router; confirm final fees and device terms |
The allowances differ, so this is not an identical-product price contest. Four 10GB eSIMs provide 40GB split across four independent phones. A shared router or host phone gives other devices a connection only while they remain nearby. If the final rental quote is above A$79.80, it costs more than those four fixed-data plans; it may still suit the group better because of different data terms or older phones.
One person, a couple and a family need different answers
Travelling alone: if 10GB fits your habits, the A$19.95 plan avoids collecting, charging and returning another device. Check your Japan data budget first. A tablet or work laptop changes the question, particularly if you need them online for long sessions.
A couple: two independent plans let you split up without arranging a data handover. One shared connection may work if you are together nearly all day. Keep the cost of a backup connection in the comparison instead of assuming separation will never happen.
A family: a router can suit several Wi-Fi devices, but one adult has to carry and charge it. Separate eSIMs suit teenagers or adults who travel independently. A mixture can work too: each adult has data, while a child’s tablet uses downloaded content and occasional permitted hotspot access.
Unlimited phone data does not always mean unlimited sharing
Our seven-day Japan 10Mbps unlimited plan costs A$24.95 and has 6GB of hotspot data across the entire validity period. That is not 6GB a day. The seven-day full-speed unlimited plan costs A$34.95 and states that tethering has no separate hotspot allowance. Network conditions still affect actual speeds, and exceptional restrictions to protect the network can apply.
That A$10 difference buys materially different sharing terms. If the second device needs 2GB a day for seven days, its planned 14GB exceeds the capped offer’s 6GB hotspot allowance. The cheaper unlimited headline would be the wrong comparison. Read the exact Japan plan details before choosing.
Put collection and return on the itinerary
Japan Wireless counts rental calendar days, including the pickup date. Its instructions provide collection/delivery options and a prepaid return envelope. If returning at the airport, it says to post the package before security. Check the actual counter, opening hours, delivery deadline and return terms for your flights.
- Write down each device and whether it needs independent internet away from the group.
- Get a rental total for the actual dates, including chosen protection and delivery or collection charges.
- Compare that with the full eSIM basket, not just one plan.
- Check the router’s connected-device, battery and data terms, or the host phone’s hotspot allowance.
- Save offline tickets and meeting points in case the shared connection is unavailable.
Choose the arrangement you can live with every day
Pocket Wi-Fi is a sensible option for a group that stays together and wants a dedicated device. Separate eSIMs are a sensible option when independence matters. The general pocket Wi-Fi comparison covers the device trade-offs beyond Japan, while our family guide helps assign plans phone by phone.
For SIM Shop eSIMs, check every phone’s compatibility and unlock status, buy before flying and save each setup email. Install after landing using reliable Wi-Fi. The quoted Japan fixed and unlimited offers have a 60-day start window; their 30-day or seven-day validity begins at first network connection.
