Put the busiest day beside the whole trip
The Japan daily selector has a useful reminder that allowance size and price do not always move together. Compare the actual seven-day offers and their reset rules before buying, rather than assuming the 1GB/day option must be cheaper than 3GB/day.
Assume you plan to use 500MB of phone data on six days and 3GB on one busy day: 6 × 0.5GB + 3GB = 6GB for the week. Those are stated planning inputs, not measured app averages. A daily plan has to fit that 3GB day if you need the whole transfer at high speed; spare allowance from a quiet day cannot be moved across.
Compare these seven-day purchases
| High-speed allowance | Period and total price | After the daily amount | When fast data renews |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3GB/day | 7 days, A$22.95 | Then continues at 256kbps | Fast data renews at midnight in Japan (UTC+9). |
The 10GB plan, valid for 30 days, costs A$19.95 and covers the example’s 6GB and seven days. We would start there for this uneven use: you can spend more on the 3GB day and less on the quieter days. Use your own planner estimate or known usage if the example does not resemble your trip.
If you specifically want a daily structure for a 3GB high-speed day, the lowest-priced checked seven-day daily option meeting that amount is 3GB/day at A$22.95. Compare the table’s reset and reduced-speed terms alongside the price, since the smallest allowance is not necessarily the cheapest offer.
When the plan starts, and whether you can share it
For the 3GB/day option, start using it within 60 days after purchase. The plan’s days begin when it first connects to a mobile network covered by the plan. Sharing depends on the phone and local network. You cannot reload this offer, so buy enough days for the full stay.
If you need a laptop for work, tell us the exact plan, your phone, the device you will connect and how much you need to upload before buying. The daily data amount does not confirm that sharing will work. If we cannot confirm the connection you need, arrange a separate suitable service for the work.
Use the Japan product page for the selected offer’s named countries. A regional plan follows that list and its original expiry across the route; crossing a border does not restart the period or add a new purchase’s allowance.
Japan also has short unlimited offers and a separate local KDDI family for 11–21, 26 and 31 Japan calendar days. On those longer local plans, heavy use is reviewed over rolling periods, sharing has its own allowance for the plan, and you must meet the supplied start-by deadline. Keep Data Roaming OFF on that local KDDI line. Use the Japan unlimited guide to compare that full range rather than transferring a daily offer’s rules into it.
Finish setup after landing, while Wi-Fi is working
Buy before flying and save the email, then install after landing on airport Wi-Fi that can open a normal webpage. If it will not work, use hotel Wi-Fi or another steady trusted connection. Select the travel line for data, follow that order’s roaming/APN instructions and keep home-line data roaming and automatic switching off unless you intentionally want the home carrier’s service.
If data slows, check how much fast data you have used and when it renews before buying more or changing settings. Keep the profile installed; if the timing or remaining allowance is unclear, contact the Travel Desk with the order reference, plan name, current country and what the phone shows. Do not buy again or rescan the QR code while we check the existing eSIM.
