Whether Black Friday is worth waiting for comes down to one date, and it is not the sale date

The one date that decides it

Not the sale date. The plan’s use-by date.

A travel eSIM has two clocks and people mix them up constantly.

• The use-by date is how long you have to start the plan after you buy it. Ours are mostly 180 days.
• The validity period is how long the plan runs once it has started. That is the 7 days or 30 days in the plan name.

A November sale works for you when the use-by date comfortably reaches your departure. Check that one number and the rest of the decision is easy.

On a plan with a 180-day use-by, buying on 27 November 2026 can give you until late May 2027 to start. Many other plans, including the new unlimited range, have a 60-day window and need starting around 26 January 2027. The exact selected-plan date controls; check it before buying for a later trip.

Should you wait? By departure date

That last row is the one worth a minute of your time. A refund promise can limit the financial risk of a changed trip, but it cannot keep a 60-day plan usable for a later departure. Check the plan’s start window too.

Two things to watch if you wait

Four days is a short wait and for most people an easy one. Two things are worth keeping an eye on.

If you are flying in early December, get ready the day you buy it. Save the setup email somewhere you can reach offline, check that your phone is unlocked and eSIM compatible, and find the Add eSIM setting before you leave. After you land, join the airport wifi, finish its sign-in and load a normal page before installing from the saved email. If the airport connection is unreliable, wait for hotel or another trusted, steady wifi connection.

If the plan you want is one of the cheap ones, the discount is small. Thirty per cent off a plan under A$15 is a few dollars, so if you would rather have it sorted today, buy it today. There is very little in it either way.

What waiting can get you

The honest version, using our own sale as the example, because it is the one whose numbers we can actually publish.

Worth knowing before you plan around a number: each plan carries its own offer. Our planned discounts run at five depths depending on the plan’s supply cost, and some plans get a bigger eSIM instead of money off. All 82 current unlimited variations are in the planned sale list; they get a percentage discount rather than a data upgrade. Look at the exact selected plan when the sale opens, because its live offer and 60-day start window decide whether it fits your trip.

Two general points that apply whoever you buy from.

The price under the percentage is what makes the deal. A smaller discount on a fairly priced plan beats a big one on a plan priced high in October. Ten minutes in early November settles it: note the prices of the two or three plans you are considering, then look again on the 27th.

An upgrade can be worth more than a discount. More data for the same money is excellent when you will use it. If you were only ever going to use 3GB in Japan, take the discount on the 3GB plan instead. Match the offer to how much data you actually use.

When buying today is the better move

We sell these and we are still going to say it, because it is the right answer for a good share of the people reading.

Data on arrival is worth more than a discount. The failure mode is not paying too much. It is landing in Denpasar at 11pm with no way to reach the driver.

Late November is when travel eSIM retailers generally run offers, so if you are going to compare, that is the week to do it. Five things are worth checking before you buy anything, and we have written them up separately in what to check on a Black Friday eSIM deal.

When is Black Friday 2026?

Friday 27 November 2026. Sales generally run through the weekend to Cyber Monday on 30 November.

Do travel eSIM prices actually drop on Black Friday?

Some do. A percentage off is only meaningful against a price that stood before the sale, so the useful move is to note the prices of the plans you are considering in early November and check them again during the sale.

Can I buy a travel eSIM months before my trip?

Usually yes, up to the plan’s use-by date. On most of our plans that is 180 days from purchase. Check the use-by on the specific plan.

What happens if I buy an eSIM and never use it?

That comes down to the retailer’s refund policy, so it is worth finding before you buy. On our Black Friday plans, an eSIM that remains uninstalled, unactivated and unused can be returned under our voluntary change-of-mind promise within 12 months of purchase. It does not extend the plan’s use-by period.

Is 30% off a travel eSIM a good discount?

It is a solid size for the category in late November. What makes it a good outcome is the price underneath it and whether the plan suits your trip. Check the plan you actually want, because a retailer running a range of offers may be doing better on your plan than the headline suggests.

I fly next week. Should I wait?

Buy now. Get the plan you need, save the setup email and check your phone before you go, then install after you land on working wifi.

Is it better to get a bigger plan free or a discount on a smaller one?

Whichever matches how much data you actually use. If you know roughly what you get through at home in a week, that is a reasonable starting estimate for a trip, and it tells you which offer is the better one for you.

Should I buy an eSIM for a trip I have not booked yet?

Check the selected plan’s start window and what happens if you never use it. Buying ahead makes sense only if the plan can still be started when you expect to travel; the refund promise matters if the trip changes.
