A travel eSIM has two clocks, and buying early only goes wrong when you confuse them

The thing to hold onto: these two clocks never run at the same time. The use-by clock stops the moment the validity clock starts.

A worked example

You buy Japan 3GB / 30 days on 27 November 2026. It has a 180-day use-by.

• You have until 26 May 2027 to start it. Nothing is ticking down on the 3GB or the 30 days during that time.
• You fly on 3 April 2027. Before leaving Brisbane, you save the setup email somewhere you can reach offline and check that your phone is unlocked and eSIM compatible.
• You land at Haneda on 3 April, join the airport wifi, finish its sign-in and load a normal page. You install from the saved email, then the phone connects to a supported Japanese network. That is the moment the 30 days starts.
• The plan runs until 3 May 2027, or until the 3GB is used, whichever comes first.

You bought it four months early and lost nothing, because the only clock running in those four months was the one with 180 days on it.

How far ahead is too far ahead

If your buying date falls around late November, whether you should wait for Black Friday comes down to the same test: the plan’s use-by needs to reach your trip comfortably.

The plans where the use-by is shorter

The selected plan controls. Many variations give you 180 days to start; others give you 60. That includes the new unlimited range across Australia, Indonesia, Japan and Thailand. The examples below are not the full list of short-window plans.

This table is illustrative, not exhaustive. More live variations have a 60-day window. Always read the use-by shown with the exact selected plan.

The practical rule: if your trip is more than two months away, choose a plan whose page shows a 180-day use-by. Fixed data is usually the right place to look, but Japan 5GB and 10GB are 60-day exceptions. A Bali trip in April is well served by Indonesia 10GB / 30 days, which gives you until late May to start it. The Indonesia daily plans would need starting by late January.

The use-by is shown on each plan page. If you are buying more than a couple of months ahead, it is the number to look at before the price.

What happens to an eSIM you never install

Nothing dramatic. The profile sits waiting against your order until the use-by date passes, at which point it can no longer be started.

The part that matters is what the retailer does about it, and that varies enormously. Before you buy anything months ahead, find the answer to this one question: what is your position if I never install this? If the answer is not written down anywhere on the site, treat that as the answer.

For our own Black Friday plans we have written the refund terms down. A November purchase for an April trip works only if the exact plan has a long enough start window. The unlimited range has 60 days and will not reach April.

The twelve-month change-of-mind promise on Black Friday plans

An eSIM bought during the Black Friday promotion can be returned under our voluntary change-of-mind promise within 12 months of purchase if it remains uninstalled, unactivated and unused. This does not extend the plan’s use-by period, and your rights under Australian Consumer Law are additional to this promise.

Trips move. An eligible, uninstalled campaign eSIM can be refunded within 365 days, but it still needs starting within its original use-by window. A 60-day unlimited plan bought in November is not startable for an April trip. It applies to paid eSIMs bought during the campaign, which runs from 27 to 30 November 2026. The conditions:

• The request has to reach us within 365 days of purchase.
• The profile has to show no installation, no activation and no data use. Installed but never used still counts as installed, which is why we say all three words.
• We refund the amount you actually paid, to the card you paid with.
• Any SIM Shop Credit earned on the order is reversed with it.
• It gives you your money back rather than more time, so it does not extend the use-by date. If you keep the plan rather than refunding it, the original use-by still applies.

Your rights under Australian Consumer Law sit alongside this. They are not capped at twelve months, not limited to unused profiles and not limited to sale orders. This promise is on top of them.

Outside the campaign our standard refund policy applies.

Prepare early, install after you land

The single most useful habit, and it has nothing to do with when you buy.

Prepare at home before you fly. Save the setup email somewhere you can reach offline, check that your phone is unlocked and eSIM compatible, and find the Add eSIM setting. Those checks are easy to do at your kitchen table and much harder in an airport queue.

Install after you land, on working wifi. Join the airport wifi, finish its sign-in and load one normal page before opening the saved email. If the airport connection is unreliable, wait for hotel or another trusted, steady wifi connection. On our plans the validity starts at first connection to a supported network at the destination.

That sequence, prepare at home and install after arrival, is what makes buying months ahead straightforward.

Questions people actually ask

How far in advance can I buy a travel eSIM?

Up to the plan’s use-by date. On most of our plans that is 180 days from purchase. Check the use-by on the plan page, because a few of ours run on 60 days.

What is the difference between the use-by date and the validity period?

The use-by is how long you have to start the plan. The validity is how long the plan runs once started. The number in the plan name is the validity.

Does the 30 days start when I buy it?

No. On our plans it starts when the phone first connects to a supported network at the destination.

Can I install a travel eSIM before I travel?

You can, but we recommend waiting until you land. Prepare at home by saving the setup email and checking your phone, then install after arrival on working airport, hotel or another trusted wifi connection.

Does installing it start the plan?

Not by itself on our plans. The plan starts at first connection to a supported network at the destination. We still recommend waiting until you land so the setup and first connection happen in the place where the plan is meant to work.

What happens if I buy an eSIM and my trip is cancelled?

Should I buy a daily plan or a fixed-data plan for a trip next year?

Start with fixed data, because most of those plans run on a 180-day use-by while several daily plans run on 60. Check the plan page before buying, because Japan 5GB and 10GB are fixed-data exceptions with a 60-day use-by.
