What a long travel day actually costs in data
Netflix lists up to 1GB an hour for standard definition and up to 3GB for high definition. Other services and playback settings vary.
Music streaming is comparatively cheap at roughly 100MB an hour. Downloaded podcasts and playlists cost nothing at all once they are on the phone.
Navigation usually uses less than video, but map downloads and background traffic still count against a fixed allowance.
A long transit day with continuous streaming could exceed a 3GB daily allowance. Downloading ahead can make a fixed plan sufficient.
What each plan gives you on that day
Japan full-speed unlimited has no usage threshold or plan-level 10Mbps ceiling in the supplier terms. Actual speed and coverage can still change along the route.
Japan Unlimited 10Mbps has no volume threshold either, and ten megabits carries standard-definition video comfortably. HD playback may work when the connection sustains the required speed; 4K is more demanding.
Indonesia unlimited has no stated threshold, which is the right shape for island-hopping days.
Thailand gives you 100GB across the plan at up to 10Mbps. A single long bus day will not trouble that, though a fortnight of them might.
The trick worth knowing either way
Download before you go.
A downloaded film and offline maps cost nothing on the day, and they work in the tunnels where nothing else does. If your trip has two long travel days in it, an evening of downloading over accommodation wifi will cover them and a fixed plan will do the rest.
Unlimited is the buy when long travel days are the shape of the whole trip rather than a couple of them, and on those trips it removes the planning entirely.
The new unlimited plans must be started within 60 days of purchase. Check the selected duration and terms before buying far ahead.

Is it cheaper to just download things first?
For a couple of long days it can be simpler and works where there is no signal. For repeated heavy-use days, compare unlimited with a fixed bucket using your expected video quality and trip length.
