Is unlimited worth paying for just to stop watching your data?

These prices were checked on 31 October 2026. The 10GB plans last longer than the seven-day unlimited examples, so both purchases can cover a week without being identical services. For a ten-day trip, a seven-day unlimited plan will still end too soon.

For example, 0.5GB a day for a week plus 1GB of uploads comes to 4.5GB. Adding 25% extra room gives 5.625GB, or about 5.7GB. That fits a 10GB plan, so in this example the extra money buys the convenience of unlimited rather than data the budget needs.

If your own usage is larger or less predictable, enter the dates, activities and sharing into Plan my trip. You can still choose unlimited after seeing the estimate; the aim is to know what you’re paying to stop thinking about, without pretending every traveller needs the same fixed plan.

The shorter Japan unlimited plans do not set a total phone-data limit or routinely slow you for using a particular amount. The operator can still restrict use in exceptional circumstances to protect the network. The seven-day 10Mbps plan includes 6GB for sharing; the full-speed plan has no separate sharing limit. Actual speeds still depend on the network.

Thailand gives you 100GB at up to 10Mbps for the full plan period, then slows to 384kbps. Indonesia has no total data limit or extra slowdown for heavy use. We have not confirmed laptop sharing or its network/device limits for either destination, so ask us about your exact plan if you need that connection.

The local KDDI plans cover 11–21, 26 and 31 days in Japan. You can use unlimited data on your phone, but heavy use is reviewed over a rolling three-day period and may slow to around 1Mbps. The operator has not published a fixed number of gigabytes that triggers this slowdown.

Data shared with a laptop or another phone has its own limit for the trip: the number of plan days minus one, in GB. That gives you 13GB on the 14-day plan or 30GB on the 31-day plan. Once you use that sharing allowance, shared data may slow to around 128kbps.

The date you first use KDDI data counts as Day 1, even if you connect late in the day, and the plan ends at 11:59pm Japan time on its final day. There is also a start-by date supplied with the eSIM; an unused plan may start automatically when that date passes. Your phone needs to support KDDI, including LTE Band 18 or 26, and the local eSIM needs Data Roaming OFF. Follow its own setup details, because the shorter Japan plans work differently.

Thailand’s selected thirty-day unlimited offer is A$85.95, A$4 less than the selected 50GB/30-day fixed-data plan at A$89.95, with its 10Mbps and 100GB conditions. Indonesia’s corresponding prices are A$113.95 unlimited and A$49.95 for 50GB, a difference of A$64. Choose around the actual data job, rather than assuming unlimited always costs more or always represents better value.

The selected shorter Japan, Thailand and Indonesia unlimited offers have 60 days from purchase to start; the longer local KDDI range uses its issued deadline. Save the email before departure and install after landing on working, steady Wi-Fi. Buying for peace of mind still works best when the dates fit.
