For Japan, the supplier gives us a definite allowance position: full-speed unlimited has no separate tethering allowance. Unlimited 10Mbps gives you 6GB across a seven-day plan, or about 0.86GB a day averaged across the trip. The supplier has not published a connected-device count.
For Indonesia and Thailand we place no separate shop cap on personal hotspot use, but supplier support, network limits and Thailand metering remain unconfirmed.
What each Japan plan allows
Full-speed unlimited: no separate tethering allowance. Sharing comes out of the same unlimited data your phone uses. This is the closest thing in the category to Airalo’s written no-limit commitment, which is the strongest position in our hotspot comparison.
Unlimited 10Mbps: an allowance across the whole plan, rather than a daily one.

That is the same allowance SimCorner publishes on their equivalent Japan plans, and it sits in the same territory as Holafly’s daily cap, which we have described in our earlier comparison as the most consequential number in this category.
If you expect to share more than 6GB during a seven-day Japan trip, consider full-speed. It costs A$11 more and has no separate tethering allowance in the supplier terms.
What a gigabyte of sharing actually covers
Usage depends heavily on quality and background updates. Netflix lists up to 1GB per hour for standard definition and up to 3GB per hour for HD. A laptop synchronising files may consume several gigabytes without an obvious foreground task. Watch the connected device’s usage counter against the whole-plan allowance.
Indonesia and Thailand
Thailand has 100GB across the whole plan at up to 10Mbps, then continues at 384kbps. We offer no separate hotspot data bucket. The supplier has not confirmed how tethered use would be metered against the 100GB.
The SIM Shop places no separate cap on personal hotspot use in Indonesia or Thailand. That is a retailer policy, not confirmation that the supplier or network supports tethering on these exact eSIMs. Network caps and device limits remain unconfirmed. If a laptop or second phone must connect, choose a plan with confirmed hotspot terms or ask us before buying.
The thing that actually breaks hotspots
A hotspot can fail because of device settings, signal or plan policy. An APN setting is one common cause, but we do not have evidence for a nine-in-ten rate.
On iPhone, if your eSIM needed a manual APN, the Personal Hotspot APN field has to be filled in separately. People set the top field, get data working, then find the hotspot toggle greyed out.
On Android, set the APN before enabling tethering, then restart the phone.
The new unlimited plans must be started within 60 days of purchase. Check the selected duration and terms before buying far ahead.

In Japan yes, and the plan decides how much. Full-speed has no separate allowance. Unlimited 10Mbps gives 6GB across seven days.

Can I share the Bali or Thailand unlimited plans?
We set no separate shop cap for Indonesia or Thailand, but supplier hotspot support and network limits remain unconfirmed. Thailand metering against 100GB is unconfirmed too. Japan full-speed has a supplier-confirmed no-separate-allowance term.
How much hotspot data will we actually use?
Estimate both devices separately and allow room for video quality and background sync. The Japan 10Mbps cap is a whole-plan allowance, not a fresh daily bucket.
Why is my hotspot not working?
An APN setting is one possible cause, particularly on iPhone where Personal Hotspot may need its own APN entry. Device compatibility, signal and plan policy can also matter; contact support before changing settings or deleting the eSIM.
