Need a laptop connection? Check the sharing allowance
A plan with unlimited data on your phone can still limit how much you share with a laptop or another person. Look for the sharing allowance on the exact plan. If it is a total for the trip, it does not fill up again each morning.
Japan: the A$10 sharing decision
Our seven-day Japan plan at up to 10Mbps costs A$24.95 and includes 6GB to share across the trip. The seven-day full-speed plan is A$34.95 and supports sharing without a separate sharing allowance. Actual speeds depend on your phone and the network; exceptional restrictions to protect the network can still apply.
If the laptop needs a planned 2GB a day for seven days, that’s 14GB. The cheaper offer’s 6GB hotspot allowance is 8GB short. Of those two, full-speed is the suitable sharing choice. If you only need 2GB of sharing across the week, the 10Mbps option’s cap fits that amount; paying more for an uncapped sharing bucket isn’t automatically necessary.
A longer Japan trip has different sharing limits
The local KDDI plans cover 11–21, 26 and 31 days in Japan. For example, fourteen days costs A$60.95 and includes 13GB to share across the trip. Phone data is unlimited, but heavy use is reviewed over a rolling three-day period and may slow to around 1Mbps. The operator has not given a fixed GB trigger. After the sharing allowance, the laptop connection may slow to around 128kbps.
The date you first use KDDI data is Day 1, and the plan ends at 11:59pm Japan time on its final day. Meet the start-by date supplied with the eSIM too. For thirty-one days, the local plan is A$120.95 with 30GB to share across the whole trip. The shorter full-speed plans’ sharing terms don’t apply to this range.
Thailand and Indonesia need an exact-offer answer
Our Thailand unlimited plan gives you 100GB at up to 10Mbps across the trip, then data continues at 384kbps. We have not confirmed whether the supplier supports laptop sharing or how shared use would count towards the 100GB. Get that answered before choosing it as an essential work connection.
For a connection you depend on, choose an offer with confirmed hotspot support or send us the exact plan, connected device and planned transfer size before buying. If that combination can’t be confirmed, use a separate supported connection rather than treating “unlimited” as the answer.
Indonesia’s unlimited plan also has unconfirmed supplier support and device/network limits for sharing. Don’t rely on it as an essential laptop connection until those details are confirmed for your exact plan and devices.
A shared phone has to stay nearby
One traveller can’t take the hotspot phone to the market and leave its connection at the hotel. If both people need independent data when they split up, buy separate compatible plans. A QR code isn’t a family pass.
Stop the laptop spending the allowance in the background
Mark the hotspot as metered on Windows or use Low Data Mode on a supported Mac. Pause unnecessary cloud sync and large downloads, connect only the intended devices and compare usage before and after a short session. Our laptop checklist explains the controls.
If hotspot fails while phone data works, keep the eSIM installed. Follow only the order’s supplied APN settings and contact the Travel Desk with the phone model, connected device and exact error. Don’t reset everything or enter a hotspot APN copied from another plan.
