Black Friday eSIM deals: what to check before buying

Here’s the Japan comparison. Both plans have one total data allowance and 30 days of validity once started.

The extra $3 buys another 5GB. Whether that’s useful depends on what you’re doing with your phone.

Maps, messages and checking a booking are a different proposition from uploading videos or spending a train journey watching them. Hotel Wi-Fi might cover your evening scrolling. It won’t help much when you’re out for the day.

Use the dates and app breakdown in your phone’s mobile-data record as a starting point, allowing for the extra time away from Wi-Fi when travelling. Then enter the trip dates, activities and any sharing into Plan my trip to build an estimate. If it already includes a buffer, don’t add another one; compare that result with the 5GB and 10GB allowances rather than asking the discount percentage to choose.

I’d be happy buying less data if I knew it was enough. I’d also happily spend the extra $3 to avoid watching the allowance all holiday. On these two plans, data stops when the allowance is used, so the buffer has a practical purpose.

Say you’re taking a laptop and planning to work from your accommodation. You see an unlimited plan and assume you can hotspot everything. This is where I’d slow down and read the details.

Our Japan local KDDI unlimited 14-day plan has 13GB of hotspot data for the whole plan. That’s separate from its unlimited on-phone data. It isn’t 13GB each day.

After that hotspot allowance, tethering speed may be restricted to around 128kbps. I wouldn’t plan work video calls around that fallback. If the eSIM will be your laptop’s main connection, the hotspot allowance needs to cover that job.

On-phone use has its own rolling three-day fair-use policy. There’s no published fixed GB trigger, and restricted speeds may be around 1Mbps. So this also isn’t a promise of unlimited full-speed use in every circumstance.

I’d make the same distinction with any unlimited offer: what can I use on the phone, what can I share, and what happens if a limit kicks in? “Hotspot supported” on its own doesn’t answer all three.

Buying in November for an April trip sounds organised. It only works if the plan’s start deadline reaches April.

A plan with 60 days to start won’t make that gap. Its 30-day validity tells you how long it runs once started; it doesn’t mean you can leave it sitting unused for as long as you like.

There’s a smaller timing detail worth checking too. The local KDDI plan above counts Japan calendar days. If your first KDDI data use is at 11pm, that date still counts as Day 1. It doesn’t give you a fresh 24 hours from 11pm. That can matter if you’re trying to cover the last day of a trip exactly.

Before buying early, check both the start-by deadline and how the plan counts its days. Our buying-ahead guide goes into those dates.

A refund request window is a separate thing again. Our upcoming campaign’s 365-day change-of-mind promise requires the eSIM to remain uninstalled, unactivated and unused. It doesn’t extend the start deadline. Read the full refund conditions before relying on it.

If the phone can’t use it, the countries don’t match your itinerary or the dates don’t work, I’d move on. A lower price doesn’t give you a workaround for any of those.

Check your exact phone model and regional version with our compatibility checker, including whether it’s network unlocked. For a multi-country trip, read the actual country list. A Japan plan won’t cover the Seoul stop just because they’re on the same holiday.

Then check the final checkout amount and currency. Compare full AUD totals where available, rather than a daily average on one site and the whole-plan price on another. If payment is in another currency, account for your card’s conversion rate and any fees.

Once those things line up, choosing the cheaper plan can be perfectly sensible. So can paying a few dollars more for data you’ll use. I’d rather you buy the one that fits than chase the biggest percentage on our page.
